  CHAPTER ONE

  Florida, USA

John Grimes, Queen’s Bitch and one of the few massively modified humans in existence, crumpled up the paper in his hands. The network news broadcast of the day seemed trivial by comparison at the moment.

Frank Kurns had called him, giving him the news that one of his married cousins was having some serious difficulties.

She was having the sort of problems he would normally have been taking care of. However, he wasn’t normal and hadn’t been around to help her. He’d been busy fighting the fucking Forsaken for the last two years.

Even if he had been given the option to quit the teams and have his knowledge of the UnknownWorld wiped, he would never change his life nor his commitment to protect Bethany Anne. Without her help in the Everglades, he would be in a pine box instead of being here to do something about this current problem.

But he was alive to do something, and working on how to do it.

He stood up from the chair, all six and a half feet of muscle, brains and masculinity. No one ever confused John Grimes with a metro-sexual. He was clean shaven and his nails were properly trimmed but he had no use for the latest colognes or skin goop. He hadn’t used those sort of toiletries before Bethany Anne’s blood changed him, and he sure as hell didn’t need any of them now.

He had always made an entrance, his size alone guaranteed that. While serving in the military, he added danger to his aura. He had ‘been there, done that’ and people could sense it.

Then he got roped into the Forsaken Nosferatu bullshit. That opened his eyes up in ways that he never wanted to share with the world at large.

He reached over and picked up his shoulder holsters, sliding them on and then grabbed his ‘MIB’ jacket. He pocketed the dark sunglasses he enjoyed wearing so much.

However, issues with the UnknownWorld wasn’t the problem right now. Right now, his cousin Cheryl Lynn was in serious strife with her soon-to-be-ex.

She had left a significantly bad life-choice, named Mark, nine months ago. Mark had used his considerable legal knowledge to put his ex-wife and their two children through hell for rejecting him. The children were pre-teens and both of them had chosen to live with their mother.

As is so prevalent these days, he blamed everyone else for his problems instead of looking in the mirror.

John grabbed the SUV keys and set out to find his ultimate boss. He needed to discuss the situation with her. He knew that he might not be able to go deal with the issue himself as keeping Bethany Anne safe was his top priority. But he knew his boss, and she wouldn’t allow his cousin’s situation to continue. He wasn’t sure who she would send, but he was certain this would get taken care of.

He was damned sure of that! With the same confidence he had that the sun would rise in the east this morning.

What he hadn’t figured into the equation, was that she would make sure he got a chance to deal with this problem himself.

How? She was going along for the ride.

  Outside of Dallas, TX

Mark Lindell looked in the mirror and flicked a small piece of lint off the shoulder of his suit jacket.

He turned left and then turned right, eyeing himself in the mirror confirming what he thought was true.

  He looked damn good.

The twenty-one-year-old in his bed was still sleeping off the activities of their night together. She was just another reminder that he hadn’t lost his touch, in or out of bed.

He had brought her here, to one of the more exclusive hotels in Dallas, and paid for two nights. It was late Friday morning and he was satiated. He didn’t need another night to stoke his ego.

She could find her own damn way home.

He left a note mentioning that he had been called away to deal with work issues. However, the room had another couple of hundred dollars still on the account and she could order room service and enjoy the room for another night. It was so much easier to end it this way.

Besides, he left a smiley face on the note. Emoticons were the ‘in thing’ and including one should make everything better, right?

He shut the door of the penthouse suite behind him, hoping he didn’t wake up Sarah… Or was it Jenni?

No, it was Tammy. Jenni was last weekend.

He waited as the elevator to descended the twenty-one stories from the executive floor of the hotel to the main floor. Then he swung by the front desk and explained that he needed to leave but his companion would be staying an additional night. He ensured the bill was paid and the suite’s incidentals credit had the maximum approved amount. By the time he made it to the Valet, his Mercedes SLK was waiting for him.

He tipped the Valet a twenty and got in. He figured he should at least swing by his office and check a few things. No reason to be a complete liar. Cheryl Lynn had thrown his lies in his face for the last nine months. Ever since she found out about him sleeping with a pair of twins. He had told her he’d be working late that night with the guys from the advertising agency.

Her accusations had really offended him! He had been working late with the guys from the agency. But then they had gone for drinks and a pair of sisters had looked him over. He noticed them checking him out during dinner and knew he had just been put on their ‘interesting’ list.

He didn’t want to be on the interesting list, he wanted to move himself to the desired list. Once dinner was finished, he lingered after telling the rest of the guys he was going to rest a minute before he headed home.

He was on the hunt, and he had to get his fix. He needed to feel alive and there wasn’t a better way to make that happen than closing deals. Getting a woman, or in this case two, to go to a hotel room with him was closing a deal.

Then Cheryl Lynn had confronted him when he got in at a little past two A.M. He tried to play it off as a one-time incident, but the little bitch had hired a private investigator who had tailed him for six months. As a result, she had pictures of him with three other conquests.

She just didn’t understand that those women filled a need in his ego. Getting them into bed with him was the ultimate proof he could conquer. The perfect unarguable truth that he was desirable, along with incontrovertible confirmation of his Machismo, when they lost their damn minds and screamed in the heat of passion.

The women didn’t mean anything to him, but Cheryl Lynn wouldn’t listen. Then neither of his children would either. The bitch had obviously lied to his children about him. She acted as if he was somehow less of a man because he still had ‘it’ and used it occasionally.

He hadn’t thought twice when she asked him, “Am I not enough for you?”

He had just shrugged his shoulders, “Been there, done that.”

Dallas Love Field - Personal Jets Area.

Chester Dextress was waiting for the private jet to finish taxiing to the parking apron. His responsibility was to make sure they had the hookups to refuel and take care of wastewater and any other replenishable
s they might need.

He was waiting in front of the private hangar of one of the FBOs (fixed based operators) ready to help the Gulfstream when two vehicles drove in from the access road. He turned to watch as a black, well tinted, late model Jeep drove in. It was followed by a Mercedes Maybach S600. Chester whistled to himself. That was one sweet ride and downright sexy.

They were also heading right at him.

On this jet must be a pretty high level person. He wasn’t sure who it was, but with that kind of car Chester was guessing high level CEO. He turned his attention back to the Gulfstream as it was slowly making its way over to him. He could see the pilot and co-pilot in the cockpit.

His tablet buzzed. He looked down and reviewed the instructions. The plane was refueling and departing. That worked for him, in and out were the types of jobs he liked. That meant everyone on the jet would be focused and he wouldn’t have to wait around for instructions.

The plane stopped just as cool as could be and the door was lowering no more than thirty seconds after it stopped. He watched as a sharp looking young man stepped down the ladder and walked around, checking the area before calling back into the plane.

That was when King Kong stepped through the door.

Chester wanted to just stare, but he was able to get his astonishment under control when Sir Large-as-a-tree descended the steps and started looking around himself. This guy was wearing a black suit, white shirt and a blood-red tie. Completing the ‘look’ he had on a pair of black sunglasses. Chester finished his review before the first guy went to stand by the stairs and the big guy started walking over to the first vehicle, the black jeep.

A professional looking black man stepped out of the jeep and closed the door. He waited for Kong to walk over and they shook hands. Chester watched the big man nod and then he started walking around the Jeep. He pulled out what looked like a metal pencil that extended and turned into a longer rod with a mirror on the bottom. He walked around the Jeep using the mirror to look underneath.

Finished, he took a clipboard from the black gentleman and signed it. The driver of the Jeep took the paperwork, pulled a yellow copy for Kong and handed him a set of keys. Then he walked over to the Mercedes and it left.

  What the hell?

Chester looked over to see the first guy turn, look up in the plane and reach up to accept a long bag which clinked when handed down to him. He took the bag and walked it over to Kong who put it into the back of the Jeep.

Chester was thinking that it didn’t look like a golf bag. If it was what he surmised, he didn’t want anyone to know that he thought it was anything but a bag of golf clubs. The first guy went back and boarded the plane.

He noticed yet another person had started to disembark the plane. Chester’s eyes widened perceptibly.

“Please, oh please.” He spoke under his breath, “Please be a damsel-in-distress.” Chester didn’t know how to provide mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, but he was willing to pretend that his experience as an almost-ok-French-kisser was sufficient to make the attempt.

The woman was dressed in a beautiful white short-sleeved top with long flowing black pants and some sort of red soled high-heels. The temperature was in the low sixties, but she didn’t seem phased by the cold at all. Her top was tight enough he should be able to tell. Nope, not cold.

  Damn!

It wasn’t but a minute before she jumped into the passenger seat of the Jeep and Kong went around, climbed into the driver’s seat and they took off.

Chester got his little cart in gear. He would be in a happy daze for a while with the memory of that angel walking across the tarmac.

  Kong was one lucky guy.

  CHAPTER TWO

  Dallas TX - USA

Cheryl Lynn wanted to give up, sit down and cry. She touched the area by her right eye and flinched. It hurt as bad as it looked, and it looked pretty bad.

She was in the bathroom of the tiny apartment that she shared with Tina and Todd, her two children. Her, hopefully, soon-to-be ex-husband had cut off access to all of her accounts. Fortunately, she had a ‘rainy day’ fund. She had been putting aside money for Christmas each and every year. It was one checking account Mark hadn’t really cared about nor checked on.

Cheryl Lynn had squirreled away over seven thousand dollars into that account and it had been enough for her to get this, mostly horrible, little one-bedroom apartment. She was also able to buy a few pieces of furniture she found on Craigslist. A phone call to get two strong guys and a truck for fifty bucks, then she and her children had been able to at least sleep on a bed and a fold-out futon couch.

It wasn’t much, but it was better than living out of a car. She needed an income, but Mark had created legal issues on her record and it was messing up her ability to land a job.

This evening, she had been returning to the apartment from the small grocery store six blocks away having purchased tonight’s dinner and some groceries for the weekend.

She had been accosted by two guys who had started whistling at her from the doorway of a closed barber shop. Cheryl Lynn had ignored them. When she heard their footsteps start behind her, she’d tried to walk a little faster while lugging her bags.

Cheryl Lynn had turned around once and to her dismay the two guys had left the barber shop and were following her. She could see them clearly and both looked like street toughs. The white guy hadn’t shaved in a few days. He was wearing jeans and black t-shirt with a red cap. His compatriot was Hispanic. The white guy had been looking at her and elbowing his friend and laughing when she turned back around.

She still had four blocks to go. Cheryl Lynn made the mistake of thinking that cutting through the parking lot of an apartment complex would be both safer and faster. She had made it just half way through a darker area where the cars were parked, when another guy had come out of the bushes at the other end and smiled. His teeth gleamed faintly in the poor light from the security lamp that had been placed on the side of the apartment building too many years ago.
